Scenic beauty is your thing then road trips are a must on your vacation itinerary. It is said that the journey itself becomes the destination as it offers one of its kind experiences. People who love taking cross country road trips can vouch for the adrenaline rush that their journey gave. The destination figures a distance second.

Whether by car or bike, a road trip is a life changing experience for many as not only it allows a person to visit different destinations but also makes life even more interesting what with meeting different people of different regions, tasting varied cuisine and visiting places that do not figure on the map.

The pros at the road trip game provide guidelines for making that road trip a memorable one; whether alone or kids in tow.

Considerations While Travelling By Road:

Keep Your Vehicle In Great Condition – Road trips to near or far destinations by bike or car require that the vehicle to be used is in great working condition. You would not like the car /bike to breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Make a check list of what part needs replacement or repair. Check for air pressures, grease/oil and fuel levels, motor running conditions, locking systems, GPS if available, insurance and ownership papers to name a few. If possible run a full check on the vehicle to avoid problems at later stage.

Pack Luggage As Required – Packing too much or too little would mean disaster and expense. Pack your luggage as per the climate of the region you will be passing through or reaching. Preempt the requirements by making a list of things you will need; sorting the things you already have and shopping for things which you do not.

Know Your Route - Sometimes it is easy to wander off if you are travelling alone. Therefore ensure that you stick to the route and do not be afraid to ask for directions; after taking precautionary measures – do not reveal too much information about yourself to total strangers. If going on trip with the family ensure that they also know the route after consulting maps or GPRS as the case may be.

Food & Water Supply – Long trips make you very hungry. Pack as much food from home as possible to avoid unnecessary expenses and health scares. Keep your homemade sandwiches, celery sticks, yogurts, dips and salads (cucumber, carrot, tomatoes, olives etc) in a cooler. At the same time add to this list fun and healthy snacks such as whole grain crackers, dry fruits, granola bars, fresh fruits and natural fruit juices to eat when you do not want to eat out. These are also useful when the kids are around. However, longer trips require that you eat at roadside joints/restaurants. Make the best of the menu by selecting items that are health – low calorie, high fiber. Steer away from soda and sweetened juices as they work as diuretics and will dehydrate you sooner than later. Buy bottled water in large quantities to keep dehydration and fatigue at bay.

Breaks – Continuous driving is not only hazardous but also bad for your back. Take small breaks at two hour intervals to relieve back pain and all the toxins. Persons travelling with children know the importance of providing small breaks for a happy travelling experience. Children are a content lot when they have toys, portable games/dvd players, books/comics or even a favorite blanket/pillow while on a road trip. For babies and toddlers it is specifically recommended that they be strapped to a baby seat and be given small breaks to avoid crankiness.

The joys of travelling by road are beyond compare. A road trip is a great way for the family to come together to share wonderful experiences. It allows the children to see and understand various locales and cultures. It provides enriching experience that creates fond memories to be recalled later over a family dinner.

The author, who has authored health related articles on HGH, acne solution and yoga, is fond of taking road trips and believes that they offer enriching experiences for the entire family.

Everyone likes to travel around the same times each year, which is why airlines raise prices during these peak seasons. If you want to travel around a holiday or during summer months, flights are going to cost you more money than they would if you traveled to the same destination during non-peak seasons.
If you want to travel during peak seasons, there are ways to find cheap flights—it just takes a little bit of hard work and some sacrifices. The following are six tips and tricks to finding cheap flight during peak seasons.

1. Don’t be stuck on your schedule.

Everyone wants to fly when it’s convenient for them, but the more convenient the flight, the more expensive it’s going to be. If you become flexible with your flying schedule, you can land some great deals. For example, trying flying in or flying out at an odd time, such as 3 or 4am. Not many people will want to take these flights, so the prices for them are a lot less expensive than flying at a more normal time.
This also works with days of the week. Flying over the weekend is more expensive than mid week flights. Instead of traveling from Saturday to Saturday, try traveling Wednesday to Wednesday instead.
2. Be willing to stop.

One-way flights are more expensive than those that make multiple stops. While multiple stops and plenty of flight transfers can make your travel time longer and more exhausting, it’s a great way to save on airfare during peak flying seasons. Not many people are willing to accept layovers, but if you can make this sacrifice, it will help keep money in your pocket.
3. Use smaller airports.

The more popular an airport is, the more expensive flying in and out of them will be. Try to find lesser known or smaller airports in a close proximity to your destination. It may require you to drive a bit further, but flying in to Baltimore instead of Washington DC for example could save you hundreds of dollars on flights.
4. Become a frequent flyer.

Most airlines offer rewards to members who are frequent flyers. Though you need to do a lot of traveling in order to earn the rewards, you do get rewarded with cheaper—and sometimes free—flights. Plus, frequent flyer members tend to be kept in the know more than non members. Airlines will send out email notifications of specials or possibly make them aware of any last-minute openings on certain flights.
5. Book early.

If you book your flight far enough in advance, you will have a significantly cheaper flight than those who are booking at the last minute. If you are planning a vacation during the summer, you should book your flight after the holidays. Airlines will oftentimes double the price of a flight for those who are booking closer to their departure date.
6. Shop around.

Do not ever take the first flight you find. If you want to find a great deal on a peak season flight, you need to take your time to do some comparison shopping. Use the airline’s direct websites as well as other travel sites, such as Travelocity or Orbitz. You may just find the best deal at the last site you check.
You shouldn’t have to spend a fortune to travel during peak seasons. Use these six tips to help you find a flight at a great deal, and you can spend all your extra savings on touristy things.

Glen Griffin is an airline pilot and father who loves to spend his free time writing for blogs. He is an outspoken advocate for proper grammar and often encourages his associates to proof their work with a grammar checker. His favorite part of flying is bringing along his own bag of spicy peanuts and digging in.

Imagine lying on the beach soaking up the summer sun, with temperatures reaching into the high 30s centigrade. Now imagine lying on the same hot beach and gazing up towards the snow-capped mountains.Well this is what is in store for those planning to spend their vacations in Crete. The island is one of the biggest in the Mediterranean and has a fascinating climate as well as geology.

The tall mountain ranges in the central area can remain snow capped throughout the year.Crete also boats some spectacular gorges and beautiful fertile valleys which have helped give rise to the claim that the island was the home of the ancient Greek God Zeus.Set against this awe inspiring back drop, Crete is a huge draw with holiday makers, especially during the warm summer months with sun throughout the day and temperatures rarely dropping below 30 C during the day.

Like much of Greece, the holiday facilities are first rate and are especially attractive to families who favour hotels like the Hotel Minos Mare Royal, Ikaros Beach Resort & Spa, Hotel Corissia Princess, Hotel King Minos Palace and Hotel Corissia Beach, all rated in the top five for families on the island.

These are modern and well designed hotels boasting all the facilities you could need to enjoy a first class summer holiday and fine food. But finding a spot to get away from the crowds is not that hard. Crete has a coastline that is 1,000 kilometers long. with many sandy beaches and a host of quiet coves and bays where you can relax and unwind.

The island was also the home of the Minoan civilisation and so boats a world wide historical importance. Thousands flock to archaeological sites including Knossos. With so much to see and do, some families come back years after year, never tiring of what Crete has to offer.

Tamworth is home to one of the world’s largest music festivals. True, the Tamworth Country Music Festival is responsible for the city’s world-wide fame, but it has a great deal to offer besides its yearly Festival. When you visit Tamworth outside of the peak tourist season in January, you discover a thriving country town that epitomizes the best of rural Australia.

It is no accident that Tamworth and country music became virtually synonymous. Tamworth has always been and remains essentially a country town. Before it became famous for its festival, it had already been established as the regional centre of the New England area of New South Wales. Starting as far back as 1831, sheep and cattle stations were established in the area. Then, even more than now, expert horsemen were needed to herd livestock. This led to a proud equestrian tradition that exists in the city to this day.

Interestingly, Tamworth’s first claim to fame was as Australia’s "City of Light." It got this distinction after electric lights were installed throughout the city streets in 1888. This is particularly interesting because Tamworth hadn’t yet been actually proclaimed to be an incorporated city. That didn’t happen until 1946. The following year, East-West airlines opened the first commercial air service between Sydney and Tamworth and the city began to blossom into what it is today.

Proud Tamworth locals don’t really think of their town as either the country music capital or the City of Light. They prefer to say that they have a town with a "City Heart and a Country Soul." Nothing could describe Tamworth better. When you step off the bus, you almost feel like you’ve gotten off your horse after a long day on the trail. Tired and "saddle sore," you really appreciate the hospitality you receive when you sit down for your first delicious meal in a local cafe or restaurant.

Some people are surprised by the variety of restaurants in Tamworth and the quality of the food and wine. Yes, a lot of the fine restaurants and cafes are there to cater to the tens of thousands of visitors who turn up for the Tamworth Country Music Festival. What you may not know, though, is that much of the produce and wine that you are enjoying comes from local growers and vintners.

If you have a hankering for a night on the town and want some entertainment, there’s almost as much on offer in Tamworth in the off season as there is during Tamworth Country Music Festival time. There’s always something going on in the pubs and hotels in town. In fact, that’s a great way to see some of the local music talent in an intimate setting.

There are more than enough great Tamworth accommodation to choose from. If you are planning on visiting in late January during festival season, you will need to book well in advance, but otherwise, a little advance notice should be fine.

The capital city of Italy, Rome is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. In fact in 2007 it ranked as the 11th most visited cities in the world! It’s easy to see why people are drawn to this ancient city. With a large number of monuments and museums, amazing gardens and almost sinful cuisine, and even the possibility of heading to the Vatican and joining an audience to view the Pope, Rome definitely has something for everybody. Tourists tend to flock to the same locations, but with a bit of research you can uncover some of the hidden secrets that Rome holds.

Let’s start out with something that may seem a bit off, at first – the Protestant cemetery. This old cemetery is located near the Pyramid of Cestius and is the perfect place to escape to if you’ve had enough of the busy streets and chaos that you can find in the main areas of Rome. Why would you want to visit a cemetery? Not only is it a peaceful spot, it’s also the resting place of many people that you may have heard of, like John Keats, Percy Byshe Shelly, and well-known poet Gregory Corso.

If cemeteries aren’t your thing, how about heading to a basilica? St. Peter’s Basilica is arguably one of the most visited basilica’s in the world, receiving around 20,000 visitors a day on average. If you don’t want to have to handle the crowd, head to one of the many smaller basilica’s around the city, like the San Paolo Fuori le Mura. This little-known church is known as the third largest church in the Christian faith and yet has very few visitors in its large open halls. In fact you may find that you are the only one!

If you are going to be staying in Rome apartments than you may have time to book a spot to view the Vatican Gardens. In order to get into the gardens you’ll need to book at least a week in advance, but the beautiful grottoes and unique ambience have been touted by those who have had visited it as being something that you have to see to believe.

If you’re looking for entertainment, skip the well-known tourist spots and head to the Church of Sant’Anselmo All’Aventino. This church is located in Trastevere and, in fact, is not very far away from a number of Rome accommodation rentals. What makes this church so special in a city that is filled with churches? The view is spectacular, allowing you to see almost the whole city, but if you plan your trip to arrive for 7:15 PM you will be allowed to watch as the local monks gather and perform their Gregorian chant. Everyone is allowed to observe the 45 minute ritual, and you can hit up the gift shop that is also on the premises, which is filled with items that were created by those very same monks. When you stay in apartments in Rome you’ll find that you have much more time to find all of these secret little gems that hide in this amazing city.

Travel today has been made easy. You can book your dream destination through the click of the button but ensuring your holiday goes as well as dreams of it is a whole new piece of cake altogether. Like many travelers have found, most holidays plans are rather unrealistic. You might end up squeezing in so much sight-seeing that you end up more tired than refreshed after your trip.

What to carry when traveling is of prime importance. First things first; research the weather reports. You don’t want to take a parasol along when what you need most are woollies. Secondly, most travelers end up packing all sorts of unnecessary ensembles which they end up lagging around. Travel light and make sure you fold or roll your clothes up well to avoid creasing. Jeans are a good option though a formal outfit is a safe bet. If you’re not sending your clothes to the laundry for dry cleaning, tub washes them and hand them for ironing.

Currency too is an important aspect as you don’t want to get stranded without the right cash or run to a cash exchange. Also, check to see if your credit or debit card is functional there. Don’t carry too much cash in your wallet as most travelers’ tales do recount how easy it is to be mugged. Cash those traveler’s cheques one at a time and slow down on the shopping. Customs is extremely trying if you’ve landed up with what seems like enough purchasers to open shop.

Sleeping hours whilst travelling are difficult to maintain. After jet travel, if you experience jet lag, it’s better to sleep it out rather than rush into sightseeing. Try relaxing too. If you go sightseeing in the morning, spend the afternoon lazily either by sitting and reading or chatting with new friends. Refresh yourself for the evening out and try to turn in early. Too much alcohol has the negative effects of a hangover and a feeling of bloatedness. So, moderation in what you eat and drink will help you feel light. Make sure the water is safe and whatever you eat outside has been made hygienically. The last thing you want to do is lie sick in the hotel!

Don’t forget to take your digital-camera along so you can keep your friends up-to-date on your travels and cause a stir of admiration and envy! Try to take back some flavors too by jotting down the traditional recipes or you can make a mini-scrap book in quiet afternoons at the hotel. Don’t go to all the places in the tourist brochure, the local people many a time can tell you of even more interesting places along with their folk lore and myths.

It’s better to travel in a group or with some of your close friends rather than alone. It’s safer and you have more fun in sharing your discoveries. So, turn to the map and chart where to go keeping in mind your preparation to be travel savvy.

Why do you go on vacation? Why do you travel? Perhaps one of the most common answers to these questions would be “to take a break from daily life”. It is understandable that most people want to spend some time away from the daily rigors of their existence, and traveling to a different place is always a good way to do it.

However, there is more to traveling and going on vacation than just merely indulging yourself. Now, do not get me wrong. I am the first one to stand up, pack my bags, and go to the nearest beach to recharge and pamper myself to death. There is another side to traveling that not many may consider, though: volunteering.

Volunteering on vacation, travel volunteering, or whatever you may want to call it, is the idea of going on a trip and offering your services to the local community. There are many organizations that organize these kinds of vacations, and the services that are offered to the community of the destination are also just as varied.

For example, you can volunteer to help build houses for the poor. Habitat for Humanity is well known for this. You can also volunteer to spend a longer period of time to teach children – even adults! Whatever program you end up joining, the bottom line is the same: you get to have a different travel experience, and the people you interact with benefit from your vacation as well.

Aside from being able to help those in need, how else can volunteering while on vacation benefit you?

I cannot think of a better answer than obtaining a sense of self-achievement. This may sound selfish, but anyone who has tried helping others out without expecting anything in return will know that this feeling is hard to beat. Knowing that you are able to make the lives of other people better is something that will help you sleep better at night.

More than having a sense of self-achievement, volunteering on vacation also broadens your horizons. This is especially true for those who may have it good at home. Many first world residents have their own issues, but only when they get to see how less fortunate people live do they fully realize how good they have it. Volunteers will tell you countless epiphanies they have had while offering their services on vacation. And when you get back home, you will only appreciate what you have even more.

On a more practical note, volunteer vacations can benefit you in terms of your profession. Surveys have consistently shown that companies see it as a plus if job applicants have foreign travel experience. Add to that the fact that you actually traveled not only for yourself but for others, and you will be looked upon in a better light. This is connected to the previous point that volunteer travel gives you more awareness of reality beyond your own situation. This kind of awareness only makes one more tolerant and open to deal with all sorts of situation that may come up in the course of one’s job.

Planning your next trip? Why not consider volunteering?

Located just 52 miles (84km) from Adelaide, Victor Harbor, on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, was originally a whaling station. While the whaling days have finished, Victor Harbor’s whale watching days are in full swing. The months of June and July are the peak whale watching season in Victor Harbor. The lure of the whales is the magnet that attracts many visitors to the Fleurieu Peninsula, but it is the many other attractions that draw them back during the summer months.

From 1837 to the mid-1860s, Southern Right Whales were so extensively hunted, their numbers dwindled from an estimated 200,000 to just a handful. They got their unusual name because these slow moving whales, who feed close to shore, were the "right" whales to kill. Their numbers were decimated so quickly, whaling was no longer a viable industry and the few remaining whales migrated to safer waters to breed and feed.

Fortunately, they are now a protected species and their numbers have been steadily increasing. It is estimated that there are now as many as 7000 or more and they are multiplying rapidly. Since the 1990s, they have been coming back to Victor Harbor on their migratory circuit from the sub-Antarctic. They have been coming in ever increasing numbers, too and with each passing year they can be seen more frequently from the same place on the Bluff where the old whalers used to raise a red flag to alert the ships in harbour of their arrival.

Another "Must See" Victor Harbor attraction is the horse drawn tram that runs across a long wooden causeway out to nearby Granite Island. Many people think this colourful tram is just a tourist attraction, but in fact it has a proud place in Victor Harbor history as part of the first public railway line in Australia. Originally, the railway ran from the Murray River port of Goolwa and Port Eliot, 11 kilometres (6 miles) away. Horses were used instead of coal because they were more cost effective. The line was extended to Victor Harbor and from there out to Granite Island.

The Causeway tram is such a popular Victor Harbor attraction, it runs every 20 minutes. The ride across the Causeway on a horse drawn tram is worth doing for its own sake, but you will also want to spend time exploring Granite Island. It is also home to a large colony of the world’s smallest species of penguin. In order not to upset them or their natural habitat, you have to stay at least 5 metres away from them and not disturb them in any way. The best way to see them is on a guided night tour.

You can’t miss the Bluff when you visit Victor Harbor. Even if you go in the summer, when the whales cannot be viewed, you will be swept away by the stunning vistas you see from its prominent summit. Look for the plaque commemorating the encounter between Victor Harbor’s discoverer, Mathew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin, the French explorer, in 1802.

Victor Harbor is the largest community on the Fleurieu Peninsula and its biggest tourist centre, so there are plenty of Victor Harbor accommodation options to be had. Transportation to and from Adelaide includes regular bus and air services, so there is no excuse not to spend a weekend or a week exploring Victor Harbor and the rest of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful places in the UK and is also one of the most popular holiday destinations. It is a mecca for walkers, cyclists and water sports but there are lots of other things to see and do there. The area around Windermere has many attractions and in Windermere itself you can find the World of Beatrix Potter.

The writer lived in the lakes and many of her stories were inspired by the beautiful landscape. In the World of Beatrix Potter many of the characters are brought to life and the children can meet the likes of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-duck. You can enjoy afternoon tea in the Tailor of Gloucester Tea Room whilst the children have lots of fun.

A short walk up the road from the Beatrix potter exhibition you come to the Windermere Steam Boat Museum which houses a fantastic collection of steam vessels. You can trace the history of boat building in the Lake District over a two hundred year period. If this has given you a taste for steam boat travel then take a walk down to the lake and book yourself on a cruise.

The lake is ten and a half miles long and you get fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. During the summer months a cold buffet is served and a jazz band provide entertainment. Still on a literary theme, the village of Grasmere is a lovely place and was once home to the poet William Wordsworth and his sister. They lived in Dove Cottage which is open to the public.

The Wordsworth Trust provides guided tours and you get see where he wrote many of his famous poems and the guide provides anecdotes along the way. Next to the cottage is the Wordsworth Museum which tells the story of how he lived and what inspired him to write such wonderful poetry. Whilst in Grasmere you can visit one of the number of independent shops selling items from handmade sweaters to locally produced food stuff.

A popular stopping off point is the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop which sells all kinds of confectionary and is around four hundred years old. A short drive from Grasmere brings you to the market town of Keswick where you can visit the Mining Museum. Copper and lead were mined extensively here and the museum holds the finest collection of mining memorabilia in the country. A short walk round the corner brings you to the Cumberland Pencil Museum.

This is a fantastic place for the whole family to visit and you get to chart the history of the pencil. The children can go in to the Kids Art Studio where they can draw and colour for free. There are many events and exhibitions held here throughout the year. If you would like a bit of exercise there is a lovely walk through stunning countryside to the Castlrigg Stone Circle, just outside of Keswick.

Thousands of people visit this prehistoric site every year and you get brilliant views of Skiddaw and Blencathra from here. These are just a few of the places and attractions that the Lake District has to offer. There is every kind of water sport available on the lakes and the mountains are great for walkers and climbers. Pack your walking boots and head for the Lake District.

Chris is a travel writer for a UK holiday company that provides log cabin holidays in the Lake District. For the ultimate in self catering holiday experiences some time away in the Log Cabins with Hot Tubs is something to try.
